

For some, those four words can bring more terror than the breathtaking drop of your elevator car on Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It shouldn't take Sora to make Mickey relevant again.Dining with little ones. But the Final Fantasy team-up title from Square Enix and Ubisoft isn't enough by itself to establish Disney's brand in today's interactive landscape. Kingdom Hearts is the only area in which Disney has consistently performed. While Star Wars, Marvel, and 20th Century Studios are given those opportunities, Disney hasn't even been living up to its past reputation. But when it comes to narrative titles starring original Disney characters, there's been a noticeable lack. And it's even moving towards the tabletop and trading card game mediums, with the launch of Villainous and the much-anticipated Disney Lorcana. It has put a renewed focus on digital gaming, with games like Disney Magic Kingdoms and Dreamlight Valley drawing in a solid audience. Even 20th Century Studios' Avatar is being adapted to Frontiers of Pandora in an attempt to harness the cinematic sensation.īut Disney hasn't forgotten its original properties completely.

With the open-world Outlaws on the way, alongside Eclipse and an Indiana Jones video game, LucasFilm's slate is far more promising than Disney's. Battlefront, Squadrons, Jedi: Fallen Order, and Jedi: Survivor are some of the major examples of recent Star Wars releases. LucasFilm has embarked on this same path. The future is bright for the brand too, with Insomniac getting to develop further titles with Spider-Man and Wolverine. Marvel has been treated to Insomniac's Spider-Man and the Miles Morales spin-off, Midnight Suns, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers all on console. Disney's most recent strategy has been to build up its acquisitions via video game releases.
